8 Baby Care Hurdles that Parents Commonly Face

Pregnancy is a beautiful feeling. Carrying a baby in the womb and getting prepared for parenthood is a bliss. There are a lot of challenges that come during the pregnancy period. But the smile of the baby after birth is worth it all. Parents have to spend sleepless nights for months. But this does not affect the love for their child.

Joint families were prevalent in the past. These days the scenario has changed, and a couple is left alone to take care of the baby. New generation parents have parenting books in one hand and internet access in the other. There is always something that keeps bugging the to-be parents of the baby.

Some of the significant hurdles faced by parents include:

    1. Issues related to breast-feeding: Breast-feeding is considered to be quite essential for a new-born baby. It boosts the immunity of the child. When the nurses assist the mother, then it seems easier. But the reality is not so comforting. Although it is a natural process yet some women may find it challenging to breastfeed their newborns. The baby must be fed within an hour of delivery. Usually, hospital nurses help at this time but once learned, it can be a cakewalk for the mothers. If you try to establish a feeding schedule very early, it may hamper your milk production. You need not worry about the production of milk in your body. The positioning of the baby must be taken care of before latching the baby on to your beast. The mother should take at least eight glasses of liquids to produce sufficient milk.

You can ask the doctor what kind of milk supplement can be provided to the baby. Some parents are afraid that their child may have an allergic reaction. But according to doctors, only 3 to 4% of children have such allergies. In this situation, giving soy formula may also not help. This is because those babies may have an intolerance to soy protein as well.

      2. Body-Care: It is essential to keep the baby clean. Many parents get frightened by the red and blotchy skin of the baby. But face acne is quite common in newborns and is nothing to worry about. However, only gentle and trusted products should be applied to the delicate skin of the baby.

Also, several new-born babies may face a blocked tear duct. Yellow discharge or crusting on the eyelids or eyes may be observed as well. Usually, the tear ducts open before one year. But this problem may continue for a few more months. Parents can follow a simple tip. They can wipe the affected area with a moist cotton ball.

Many babies may face cradle scalp problems. This is nothing to get worried about, as the condition disappears within a few months. A baby can also develop red and itchy patches. This condition is called eczema. It can be solved by limiting the bath time up to only ten minutes. Only mild soaps with lukewarm water must be used. The cotton fabric should be preferred for babies.

        3. Irregular Sleeping Patterns: Newborns need to sleep for about 16 hours per day as recommended by ICMR, for the first two months. The sleeping pattern includes sleep of two to four hours. They wake up if they are wet or need to be fed. Babies require food every three hours. So the parents may need to wake the baby up and feed him or her. Every baby is unique therefore their sleeping pattern varies from one baby to another. Do not get afraid if your baby does not follow the new baby sleeping routine. It is better if you keep changing the position of the baby’s head while sleeping. The reason behind this is it will prevent the formation of flat spots on the head. The baby should be put on the back while sleeping. This helps in proper breathing and avoids suffocation. The mother can also try to take a nap with the child. It will help her to rest and keep up with her sleep requirement. It must be taken care that there is consistency in the sleeping pattern of the baby. You can include massages, baths, and reading in the baby’s bedtime rituals. This soothes the parents and their babies.

          4. Bathing the infant: Giving a bath to a newborn baby is a delicate task. Bathing the baby should be started after the cord dries and falls off. Bathing rituals can be performed two to three times a week. Keeping baby products ready beforehand is an absolute essential. Children tend to sleep peacefully after a proper bathing routine. An infant bathtub, lukewarm water should be kept ready before the bath. Only mild soaps or body washes should be used. The products should be bought from a trusted brand. The mother can ask the father or any other family member for help. One person can hold up the neck of the baby, while another person can focus on proper cleaning of the body.

Focus on cleaning the baby’s genitals, scalp, hair, neck, face, and any mucus that has collected in any area. The washcloth used must be gentle. The baby’s body should be rinsed with lukewarm water. After doing this, dry the body gently with a soft towel. Consider applying a lotion. Put on a fresh diaper and fresh clothes after the bath. If the baby seems to like the bathing process, then you can bath them once a day. But this can result in the loss of essential body oils. It can make the skin dry and cramped. By using cotton wool and lukewarm water, the baby’s genitals can be taken care of. The mother can choose a time when she feels relaxed. Also, don’t bathe the child immediately after feeding.

            5. Trimming nails: Nail cutting seems an ignorant task for the adults. But it can cause a lot of problems for babies. Small babies can grow long nails. As they have no control over their movements, they can scratch their face quite easily. They can scratch other people as well. The nails of toddlers grow ragged and sharp. It is very important to keep the nails short and well-trimmed. Babies throw a lot of tantrums when someone tries to cut their nails. They will cry and jiggle. The mother or the guardian can make this better by using the right products.

The nails of small babies can be easily peeled off. But as the baby grows up, this idea does not work. Special nail clippers and safety scissors can be used to ensure to not hurt the baby. Two people can make this task hassle-free. One person can distract the toddler, and the other can cut those nails. Choosing a time when the baby is distracted is an excellent option. Nails can be cut while the baby is asleep or being fed. The baby’s fingernails grow very fast. The nails should be cut in proper shape as It may cause ingrown nails and even infections. If you hurt the baby’s skin by chance, just maintain your cool and put damp cotton wipe on it.

The baby may start scratching things with the nails. Mittens and socks can be used to keep the hands and feet covered.

              6. Safety of child at home: Parents leave no stone unturned to ensure that their child is safe. But a minor can cause an accident. The baby should be given full attention whenever he/she is active. It is not recommended to leave the baby unattended for quite a long time. Some things should be included in your home before the arrival of your baby. When the baby starts crawling, he/she demands more attention from parents in terms of safety. If possible, try to cover the unused electrical sockets. The cords should be kept out of the baby’s reach. The sharp edges of the tables or furniture should be covered with padding. Parents can think about installing safety gates at the bottom and top of stairwells. Toxic products must be kept away. Many houseplants can cause harm to the baby, therefore, should be kept away from the toddler’s reach. Set the temperature of your home, if possible. The temperature can be set 125 Fahrenheit or below it. More precautions are required if there are pets at your place. Like human beings, pets also may take some time to adjust well with the arrival of a new member.

                7. Holding a baby: Babies are very delicate. They do not have any control over their movement. Most of the parents are worried about the position of the baby while holding. The hands must be sanitized well before holding them. It is indispensable to be comfortable while doing the same. Confidence plays an important role in this aspect. The holder must give support to the neck and head by one hand. The head is the heaviest baby part, and it can become troublesome if not managed carefully. Babies have no control over their critical muscles, so they need support with their heads. Choose a position in which you feel comfortable holding an infant. He can be raised to chest level. You can also experiment in which position baby burps. Experiments can be helpful to understand the position that soothes the baby. Skin to skin contact is good for the baby as it gives them a feeling of warmth and security. Try to hold the baby while sitting, if it makes you nervous. A pillow can be kept in the right place for safety. Make sure you don’t shake the baby.
                  8. Diaper routine: Changing diapers become an important part of your routine after the delivery. It is very important for the baby to be fed well. If proper feeding is given, you can get six to seven wet diapers in a day. You should change the diaper as soon as you feel it is full and heavy. It is important to change the diaper on time. Sometimes you may need to change the diaper ten times a day. It is normal with changing bowel movements as they grow up. The baby may cry and feel irritated once the diaper gets full. Use good quality diapers and wipes for the baby. It is not always pleasant to wake the baby up for a diaper change. Always wipe from front to back. It is better to stock up a few spare, clean diapers than to run out of them. If the skin is sensitive and prone to rashes, use a soft cotton washcloth. Sometimes you may need to change the clothes if the diaper leaks. Do not use any ointment or lotion without the advice of a doctor. The baby may not feel happy with this routine but you can sing to soothe the baby. Try keeping a toy with you to distract the baby. Ensure that you clean and sanitize your hands before and after a diaper change. Hence, a tidy baby is a happy baby.
